What we have to say about your health and well being

I read in the press that you should take an aspirin every day to stop bowel cancer. Is that true?

This was recent research that suggested there was areduced risk of bowel cancer when people took aspirin for5 years. There were a few questions over the study because it wasn’tclear how much aspirin to take and why there was a reductionin the cancer.

You also need to watch with research that where peopleanswer questions they might not be giving the correct answer. However there have been other studies also suggesting areduction in bowel cancer so yes it probably is true. But before you reach for an aspirin tablet you need to beaware of the real dangers to your stomach. Aspirin can causebleeding and ulceration.

That’s why many people are givenanother medicine such as omeprazole to protect the stomachif they need to take aspirin prescribed by the doctor forprevention of heart attacks or strokes. If you are thinking of taking aspirin then best have a word withyour doctor first.

FLU VACCINATION INFORMATION

This year GGHB is running the flu vaccination service.

If you are over 65, then please wait for your letter from the NHS. That will give you the date, time and venue . (Younger patients e.g. 65 year olds are being vaccinatedfirst) It’s also important to point out that the over 65 vaccine is different from the one given to the under 65’s and also different from the one that may be available on a private basis. The under 65’s at risk e.g. asthmatics those with diabetes etc willeither be done at their GP practice or again at a hub.

If you are under 65 and a carer please contact the pharmacy on 0141 633 3868 or admin@newlifepharmacy.co.uk where you can book in for a vaccine. Unfortunately our private service is at capacity just now and we have a waiting list
